Despite repeated efforts and different activities over the years, between 20% and 50% of the compressed air produced is still lost. It is staggering amounts in energy and cost.
Sporadic actions may at best produce temporary results but in reality you are back to the same situation within a few months.
New, more efficient compressors may be part of the solution, but in practice they just produce the waste more efficiently.
So why is compressed air being wasted in such huge amounts?
The lack of direct financial responsibility for compressed air production is the primary reason. Without the financial responsibility for the compressed air in terms of cost of producing it and how it is used, you have in practical terms a system without real accountability.
Few, if any companies have someone that is financially responsible for a cost that usually represents between 10-15% of the total energy bill.
Consequently, compressed air is regarded as the most mismanaged energy source in industry. The lack of financial responsibility hinders effective incentive structures to reduce air consumption. Due to the perceived low cost, compressed air systems are underfunded, making ROI evaluation a challenge to say the least.
