An inlet butterfly may be either electronically or pneumatically actuated. As the butterfly valve closes, effectively reducing the inlet flow and limiting the compressor&rsquo;s ability to generate pressure and airflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The IBV directs the airflow in almost straight line to the first stage of compression. (The impeller then spins the air using power from the main motor. Increasing the air speed and directing power to the diffuser part of the compressor.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the IBV is partially throttled (closed), the inlet pressure is reduced, losing some of the available static pressure. The pressure ratio of the total compressor must now be greater to meet the same discharge pressure.
